Ride Calendar

Join the Spacecoast Freewheelers on one of our B and C rated rides.  Our Saturday morning River Road ride is the most popular, starting with a social C pace for the first half, and a B pace for the rest.  Our longer rides are our B rated Sunday morning ride that changes start location and route every weekend per the calendar below.  Check out our ride calendar below and we hope to see you our riding with us.

Club Rides, Rules & Etiquette

First and foremost, we want to keep our rides safe; so please obey all traffic laws, and ride rules and paceline etiquette. If you’re unfamiliar with pacelines and new to our group please seek out the ride leader to get some pointers.

Mt Dora Ride & Luncheon @ Gilbert Park
May 19 @ 8:30 am

SCFW club ride in the Clermont Hills near Mt Dora, featuring a 20 mile C ride, and either 51 or 41 mile B ride.

20 mile C ride – A relaxed ride on mainly flat roads around Lakes Dora, Beauclair & Carlton.
Rest/refuel at Wild Bear Coffee in Tavares, mile 13.5.

51 or 41 mile B ride –
51-miler climbs Sugarloaf Mountain and Buckhill Roads; this is a very challenging course.
41-miler is a more direct route with two minor climbs along County Rd 455 (no Sugarloaf); rest of course is fairly flat.
Depending on participants, ride leaders will decide on the appropriate route, and there may be two B groups.

Bring along plenty of food/hydration; if not prepared you risk getting bonked.
Optional rest/refuel at Yalaha Bakery in Yalaha, FL (see route maps).

Post-ride Luncheon subsidized by the club at Mount Dora Brewing Co, 405 S Highland St, Mt Dora, FL 32757. Corner Liberty Ave & S Highland St, two blocks east of Gilbert Park.

Tuesday AM Training @ Cocoa Village Parking Lot
May 21 @ 8:00 am

B ride, with some portions at B+ and A- pace. Routes depend on participants & wind/weather conditions. Ride Leader(s) vary.
Meet in Cocoa Village Parking Lot, 98 Stone Street, just north of Cocoa City Hall, and west of Cocoa Village.

Distances range from 45 to 65 miles (75 to 100 km). Plan accordingly with food-hydration. We usually stop somewhere midpoint for rest/refuel.

These are NOT introductory group rides; you should be completely capable and confident riding in a group, with enough endurance to comfortably finish a 3 to 4 hour ride. You should also have no concern about fixing flats, should they happen, and carry the equipment to do so.

That said, these are “no-drop” rides: we don’t leave fellow Freewheelers behind. But you are expected to keep up and contribute to the training effort.

River Road Combo 14-28 @ Parking lot adjacent to back of Murdock's
May 22 @ 6:00 pm

Meeting place is the parking lot adjacent to the back of Murdock’s restaurant.

This Wednesday evening ride serves a combination of purposes:

The first half  of 14 miles is a C pace learning session for less-experienced riders, whereby riders with more knowledge and experience can offer thoughts and ideas for developing skills and fitness.
Pace is advised at 14-16mph.
New riders should have some group riding experience including drafting, pace line, verbal call-outs and hand signals. (Those skills can be acquired on the Saturday Club Combo.)

The second half of another 14 miles is a B pace skills-sharpening session for experienced riders.
Pace is advised no faster than 20mph to maintain safety along these narrow roads.
Participants absolutely should be very comfortable riding in a group at these speeds.

Lights are required – working white headlight and red tail-light.
As necessary to assure safe conditions for all, senior riders may take control and provide direction.

Route map and cue sheet.

Club Combo 14-28 @ Cocoa Village Parking Lot
May 25 @ 8:30 am

Gathering place for this ride is southwest corner of Cocoa Village Parking Lot, at Stone and Florida Ave. (Moved from City Parking Lot).
This location works even when civic events take over the streets of Cocoa.)

This Saturday morning ride serves a combination of purposes: social reconnect after the work week, a learning session, and warmup to Sunday C and B rides*. The several Ride Leaders are recognized as wearing yellow bandanas.

Social reconnect – South River Road, 14 miles, C pace. Group will stay together usually in a double pace-line until getting back to Cocoa. D riders (with no group experience) are welcome, and should let a Ride Leader know they are participating.

Learning session, warmup for Sunday rides – North River Road, 14 miles, B pace, max 20mph. Group will stay together in double or single pace-lines; Ride Leader(s) will guide riders in fine points of cycling technique and group skills. C riders are welcome if they feel confident in riding the distance, and comfortable with riding in a group.

The ‘A’ Extension continues another 4 miles from the north end of River Road (@ Fire station). This extension gives our most skilled and strongest ‘A’ riders a better place to ride at a challenging pace, typically 23+mph. While participation here is self-selected, if the Ride Leader is not confident in a rider’s skills, he/she may ask that rider to continue back to Cocoa with the B group.

The Route through West Cocoa takes riders off the River Road and back into West Cocoa horse ranchette neighborhoods. Rest/refuel stops at Junny Rios Martinez Park and Flying J Convenience Store.

This ride ends with a social gathering (off-bike) at Ossorio’s Cafe.
